The Macchina Volantis flying car will be a hybrid Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) vehicle with a folding wing that would navigate roads and the air.
The flying car has a large upper wing and smaller lower wing unfold for flight and retract for ground driving. It will be constructed of a carbon sandwich composite monocoque construction and the fuselage will add extra lift. The initial models will use diesel fuel for motors operating six sets of coaxial fans in four rotating and two stationary ducts. Rotating ducts are in pairs in fore and aft positions on the fuselage with the fixed ducts are situated in the lower wings.
The vehicle will go from vertical to horizontal flight in 100 seconds. Cruise speed will be 173 mph (278 km/h) with a stall speed of 75 mph (121 km/h) with a projected range of 1,000 mph (1,600 km/h). It will have a ceiling of 10,000 ft (3,048 m). The car will weigh 3,638 lbs (1,650 kg) with a payload of 1,256 lbs (570 kg). Safety equipment includes a ballistic parachute and the wings can be capable of unpowered emergency landings. The vehicle will initially be piloted (although it is listed with auto-hover) carrying up to five people and light luggage.
On the road while in automobile mode it will have a width of a standard car and can park in a garage. Its speed will be fairly limited, with a top speed governed to 37 mph (60 km/h) on a one forward, two rear, tricycle wheel system.
