During the US Air Force’s Agility Prime Launch Event in April 2020 (see “Agile Change in Air Force ‘Agility Prime’ Launch Pays Off,” Vertiflite, July/Aug 2020), a presentation by VFS Executive Director Mike Hirschberg mentioned that the potential of hydrogen fuel cells to be a gamechanger for electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) led to the founding a few weeks later of what became the Society’s H2eVTOL Council.
Fairfax, Virginia, USA, Feb. 28, 2023 — The Vertical Flight Society (VFS), the world’s leading non-profit organization working to advance vertical flight, is holding its 2nd Annual H2-Aero Symposium on March 28-30, 2023, in Long Beach, California. This year’s event includes the SAE International airport fueling standards meeting, both of which are open for all conference attendees. Details can be found at www.vtol.org/h2symposium.
Honeywell — a designer and supplier of advanced technologies, avionics, turbine engines, electric motors, navigation and other products — acquired numerous legacy companies to strengthen its position in the global aerospace business.
The Vertical Flight Society is pleased to announce the spin-off of its highly successful H2eVTOL Council into its own independent nonprofit organization, the HYSKY Society. The VFS Hydrogen-Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (H2eVTOL) Council was formed in 2020 to promote the development and advancement of hydrogen fuel cell technology in electric aircraft, has grown to over 400 participants and has become a leading voice in the hydrogen-electric aviation community.
The Vertical Flight Society (VFS), the world’s leading non-profit organization working to advance vertical flight, has published a groundbreaking whitepaper for multimodal hydrogen airport. The goal of the VFS H2-Aero whitepaper, “Multimodal Hydrogen Airport Hub,” is to propose a repeatable hydrogen hub for the airport, first with a ground vehicle fueling station, and later expanding to an airport-based hub supplying multiple modes of transportation.
Munich-based startup SilentWings is pioneering a novel concept for a vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) drone that combines a hydrogen fuel cell and a unique tail-tilting design.
In addition to the talk at the Symposium, Shell also provided a technical tour of their heavy-duty hydrogen fueling station at the nearby Port of Long Beach on the morning of March 31.
On March 29–31, the Vertical Flight Society hosted a groundbreaking, first-ever symposium and workshop on the potential for hydrogen (H2) to decarbonize aerospace.
