Korea Aerospace Industries is headquartered in Sacheon, South Gyeongsang Province, South Korea and was formed on October 1, 1999 from a merger of Daewoo Heavy Industries, Hyundai Space and Aircraft Company, and Samsung Aerospace. The company is an aerospace and defense company that manufactures fixed-wing aircraft (from general aviation airplanes to military fighter jets), helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles, space launch vehicles, satellites, training systems and more. The company has recently revealed a new passenger and air cargo electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft for advanced air mobility (AAM). Making aircraft for AAM is part of the company's new strategy to make KAI the number one aerospace company in Asia by 2030.
E2X passenger eVTOL concept design aircraft
The E2X is a modern sleek passenger eVTOL concept design aircraft. The aircraft has one pilot and carries four passengers and their luggage. Korea Aerospace Industries had a trade show booth with a subscale model of the E2X aircraft on display at the 2023 Korean UAM Conference & Exhibition, held Nov 8-10, 2023 in Incheon, South Korea.
Very few specification are know about the aircraft, such as the cruise speed, range, flight time, cruise altitude or maximum payload weight. However, the aircraft has a total of eight propellers using eight electric motors and the aircraft is powered by battery packs. Four of the propellers are tilt-propellers which are located on the front of the high main wing of the aircraft. These four propellers are used for VTOL and forward flight. There are four stationary propellers used for VTOL flight only and each pair of propellers are stacked on booms behind the main wing.
The aircraft is made of carbon fiber composite material for a high strength and low weight ratio. The cabin has high tech accoutrements and is spacious providing a practical and nice atmosphere for the passengers. The windows are larger than conventional aircraft allowing spectacular views for the passengers. The aircraft has a V tail and has retractable tricycle wheeled landing gear.
As of February 2024, we know of no known articles on the E2X passenger eVTOL concept design aircraft.
Specifications:
- Aircraft type: Passenger and air cargo eVTOL concept design aircraft
- Piloting: 1 pilot
- Capacity: 4 passengers
- Cruise speed: Unknown
- Propellers: 8 propellers (4 tilt propellers, 4 stationary VTOL propellers)
- Electric motors: 8 electric motors
- Power source: Battery packs
- Fuselage: Carbon fiber composite
- Windows: Panoramic wrap around windows allowing forward, left and right visibility for spectacular views with a solid roof above the passenger compartment
- Wings: 1 main high wing
- Tail: 1 V tail
- Landing gear: Retractable tricycle wheeled landing gear
- Safety features: Distributed Electric Propulsion (DEP) means having multiple propellers (or electric ducted fans) and multiple electric motors on an aircraft so if one or more propellers (or electric ducted fans) or some electric motors fail, the other working propellers (or electric ducted fans) and electric motors can safely land the aircraft. DEP provides safety through redundancy for its passengers or cargo. There are also redundancies of critical components in the sub-systems of the aircraft providing safety through redundancy for its passengers or cargo. Having multiple redundant systems on any aircraft decreases having any single point of failure. There is also a whole aircraft emergency ballistic parachute in case of an unexpected inflight emergency.
