Aeroelektromash JSC was founded in the 1920s in Russia and has years-long experience in the design of electrical equipment for aviation and space engineering. The company is in the business of development, manufacture and repair of motors, generators, electrical equipment, automatic control systems and other types of support systems for the domestic aviation industry. The company announced in 2019 they were developing a hybrid-electric ultra-light passenger helicopter and it is patented. The company is headquartered in Moscow, Russia. (Images: Aeroelektromash)

The R-34 rotorcraft prototype was first put on display at Helirussia 2019 which took place May 16-18, 2019 in Moscow, Russia. The helicopter has been developed under Aeroelektromash with the OKB Rotor design bureau from Kumertau, Republic of Bashkortostan.

R-34 hybrid-electric ultralight passenger helicopter prototype
The R-34 is a hybrid-electric ultralight three person helicopter prototype with coaxial rotorblades that holds one pilot and two passengers. The helicopter cabin is spacious and has a large front and large side windows providing excellent views for the pilot and passengers. The helicopter is compact, efficient and is the lowest noise helicopter in its class.

The helicopter is very efficient as there is no transmission from the engine to the rotorblades. The rotorblades are powered by an electric motor. With coaxial rotorblades, there is no need for a tail rotor since both rotorblades are turning in opposite directions and cancel the torque. Torque is created when there is only one main rotorblade. The coaxial rotorblades have a hingeless suspension design.

The cruise speed of the rotorcraft is 130 km/h (81 mph) and has a maximum speed of 170 km/h (105 mph). The range of the rotorcraft is between 350-600 km (217-373 m). The range varies depending upon how many people are inside the cabin. The maximum altitude of the helicopter is 4,500 m (14,764 ft). The rate of climb is 5.5 meters per second (18 ft per second).

The aircraft uses a Rotax 915 engine that supplies electricity to the ВД-25000 electric motor that turns the coaxial rotorblades. The electric motor is made by Aeroelektromash. The fuel capacity of the rotorcraft is 50 l (13.21 gal). The empty weight of the helicopter is 310 kg (6831 lb), has a maximum payload of 280 kg (618 lb) and has a maximum takeoff weight of 590 kg (1,301 lb).

To fuselage is made of carbon fiber composite for high strength to low weight ratio. The length of the rotorcraft is 4.95 m (16 feet, 2-7/8 inches) and its height is 2.85 m (9 feet, 7-/32 inches). The rotorblade diameter is 6.30 m (20 feet, 8-1/32 inches). There are two large inverted angled vertical stabilizers in the rear of the helicopter. The rotorcraft has fixed skid landing gear.

In case of a power failure, the helicopter can autorotate to safety or can deploy its whole aircraft emergency parachute. The company has revealed the design process is currently taking place on the R-34 helicopter for an uncrewed version.
