The information provided here is as accurate as possible; however, eVTOL information from China is sometimes sparse, incomplete or conflicting. China is promoting what they call the "low-altitude economy"—a new push for general aviation—which includes both crewed and uncrewed passenger and air cargo eVTOL aircraft.
Founded in 2022, CoolFly is based in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China and is in the business of designing and manufacturing passenger electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft for advanced air mobility (AAM). Wayne Lee, CEO is quoted on the company's website, “We are not just manufacturing aircraft, we are architecting a new way of life. We aim to make personal eVTOL as ubiquitous as bicycles—affordable and accessible to everyone in the world.”
Urban 4 passenger eVTOL multicopter (concept design)
The Urban 4 is a one passenger eVTOL concept design multicopter hover bike. The pilot stands in the middle of the aircraft with an instrument flight stand that has two handles for the pilot to hold onto. The aircraft might have autonomous piloting technology. When the aircraft is coming in for a landing, at 1 meter (3.28 feet) above the ground, the aircraft will automatically level itself and slowly descend for a smooth landing.
The estimated cruise speed of the aircraft is 40 km/h (25 mph). The aircraft has four propellers, four electric motors and is powered by battery packs. Each propeller is inside a large circular propeller housing that has top protective mesh for added safety. The maximum payload weight of the aircraft is estimated to be 90 kg (198 lb). The fuselage is made from carbon fiber composite to give the aircraft a high strength to low weight ratio. The multicopter lands on the bottom of the aircraft's fuselage. The aircraft's landing gear consists of five landing legs.
Safety Features
The aircraft has several unique safety features in the event of an emergency. If the aircraft is flown with an excess of a 45 degrees angle the aircraft will automatically correct itself to level the aircraft. In the aircraft has an in-flight accident, the propellers stop and airbags deploy around each propeller so they can't harm anyone near the aircraft. The pilot wears an airbag flight suit and when the pilot is thrown off the aircraft, the airbags automatically deploy to protect the pilot when falling on the ground. There are also redundancies of critical components in the sub-systems of the aircraft providing safety through redundancy.
Aircraft use
The company foresees the aircraft to be used for advanced air mobility (AAM), tourism, vacationing, outdoor activities (such fishing, hunting, boating, camping and other types of recreational activities) and for emergency medical response.
Specifications:
- Aircraft type: Passenger eVTOL multicopter (prototype)
- Piloting: 1 pilot. The pilot stands in the middle of the aircraft with an instrument flight stand that has two handles for the pilot to hold onto. The aircraft might have autonomous piloting technology.
- Cruise speed: ~40 km/h (25 mph)
- Maximum payload weight: ~90 kg (198 lb)
- Propellers: 4 propellers (each propeller is inside a large circular propeller housing that has top protective mesh)
- Electric motors: 4 electric motors
- Power source: Battery packs
- Fuselage: Carbon fiber composite
- Cockpit: Open cockpit, pilot stands with a back brace
- Landing gear: 5 landing legs
- Safety features: Distributed Electric Propulsion (DEP) uses multiple propellers or electric ducted fans, each powered by electric motors, to increase safety through redundancy. If one or more components fail, the remaining ones can still ensure a safe landing. There are also redundancies of critical components in the sub-systems of the aircraft providing safety through redundancy. Having multiple redundant systems on any aircraft decreases having any single point of failure.
