Founded in 2006 by Deborah and Roger Hayes in Tehachapi, California, USA, Sierra Technical Services has created the Fledermauser models of hybrid-electric cargo and passenger aircraft and each model has the ability of conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL), short takeoff and landing (STOL) and vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft. Alfaro created, patented and have licensed the Fledermauser aircraft to Sierra Technical Services for development. According to the company, Fledermauser configuration can potentially provide a higher degree of speed, safety, resilience and variable sound mitigation compared to open rotor systems of similar weight and technology level for military missions in particular.
The Fledermauser is an remote or autonomous hybrid-electric CTOL/STOL/VTOL cargo concept design aircraft designed to provide multirole airpower for military austere operations. The aircraft has 36 electric ducted fans with trailing edge flaperons and is powered by a turbine-electric powerplant and batteries. The maximum speed is 233 mph (375 km/h) and has a range of two and half hours. The empty weight 2,535 lb (1,149 kg), has a maximum payload of 617 lb (280 kg) and has a maximum takeoff weight of 3,152 lb (1,429 kg).
The aircraft has a patented fixed box wing design and each wing has eight electric ducted fans. The fuselage has a central payload bay and has retractable quadricycle landing gear. The aircraft has been made specifically for the US military for land-based and ship-to-shore cargo missions.
Specifications:
- Aircraft type: Hybrid-electric CTOL/STOL/VTOL cargo aircraft
- Piloting: Remote or autonomous
- Capacity: Cargo
- Maximum speed: 233 mph (375 km/h)
- Flight time: 2-1/2 hours
- Empty weight: 2,535 lb (1,149 kg)
- Maximum payload: 617 lb (280 kg)
- Maximum takeoff weight: 3,152 lb (1,429 kg)
- Propellers: 32 electric ducted fans with trailing edge flaperons
- Electric motors: 32 electric motors
- Power source: Turbine hybrid-electric and batteries
- Fuselage: Carbon fiber composite
- Fuselage length: 21.25 ft
- Fuselage width: 18.75 ft
- Windows: Panoramic wrap around windows allowing forward, left, right and top visibility, for spectacular views - with a solid roof above the passenger compartment
- Window: Canopy over cockpit
- Wings: Box wing
- Landing gear: Retractable quadricycle landing gear
- Safety features: Distributed Electric Propulsion (DEP), provides safety through redundancy for its passengers and/or cargo. DEP means having multiple propellers (or ducted fans) and motors on the aircraft so if one or more propellers (ducted fans) or motors fail, the other working propellers (or ducted fans) and motors can safely land the aircraft. There are also redundancies of critical components in the sub-systems of the aircraft.
