Leading eVTOL companies in the US, UK and Asia continue their developments towards certification.
The Vertical Flight Society’s TVF 2025 was held at Phoenix Convention Center on Feb. 4–6, 2025, including the 12th Electric VTOL symposium and the 11th Biennial Autonomous VTOL Technical Meeting. TVF 2025 program featured presentations by companies developing electric motors, hybrid-electric propulsion systems and hydrogen-fuel-cell-powered electric aircraft.
Over the past two months, the distance between companies that were previously considered to be leaders in the development and operation of multi-passenger electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) has increased dramatically.
Japan-based SkyDrive announced on June 17 that the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had begun its process for type certification for its three-seat SD-05 eVTOL (shown) and will coordinate with Japan’s Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB) to certificate the aircraft in both nations.
In a ceremony on March 6, SkyDrive launched production of its SD-05 SkyDrive eVTOL aircraft at a Suzuki Motor Corporation manufacturing plant in Iwata city, Shizuoka, SkyDrive said on March 7.
On Feb. 6–8, the Vertical Flight Society hosted its Transformative Vertical Flight (TVF) 2024 meeting in Santa Clara, California.
On Jan. 9, SkyDrive announced that it had secured an unspecified amount of additional funding from Suzuki for its Series C funding round, resulting in the allotment of new shares to Suzuki.
In early November, an exhibition hall dedicated to electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft opened in Japan.
On Sept. 6, SkyDrive announced that it had partnered with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) to study the noise impacts of eVTOL aircraft.
Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) took a prominent role at the biannual Paris Air Show with a dedicated hall to display electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft and a three-day Paris Air Mobility event hosted by Aviation Week.
