EASA Supports eVTOL
The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) presented the results of a study on May 19 that surveyed societal acceptance of AAM across Europe. The survey, conducted in November 2020, included research, literature reviews, and a survey with around 4,000 residents of six European cities — Barcelona, Budapest, Hamburg, Milan, Paris and the cross-border region Öresund — identified as potential future AAM markets. More than 80% of respondents indicated a positive attitude to AAM, and 71% said they were interested in flying on them. Safety, security, noise and the local environmental impact were the main concerns.
EASA expects AAM air taxi services to begin in 2024. The agency published its Special Condition for Vertical Takeoff and Landing (SC-VTOL) in 2019 and initial proposed Means of Compliance in May 2020. A revised Second Publication of Proposed Means of Compliance with the Special Condition for VTOL (MOC-2 SC-VTOL) was released on June 23, 2021.
