European Firms Find Manufacturing Partners
The UK-based Vertical Aerospace will partner with Italy’s Leonardo to build the fuselage for the VX4 eVTOL. The agreement, which was announced on Feb. 8, will see Leonardo build the lightweight composite fuselage at its Grottaglie plant in southern Italy, the same facility that produces parts of the fuselage for the Boeing 787. Leonardo will also support Vertical’s development of the initial six certification aircraft.
Airbus, meanwhile, announced on March 8 that it has partnered with Spirit AeroSystems to produce the wings for the CityAirbus NextGen (shown). Manufacturing will take place in Belfast, Northern Ireland, at the former Bombardier Aerospace facility acquired by Spirit in 2020. “The partnership with Spirit AeroSystems is an important step for the development of CityAirbus NextGen and its wings are key structural components for flight efficiency,” said Dr. Joerg P. Mueller, head of Airbus Urban Air Mobility (UAM).
