Safran to Power TCab Tech
TCab Tech, a China-based eVTOL developer, has selected French firm Safran Electrical & Power to provide the electric motors for its E20 eVTOL aircraft, the two companies announced on May 31. Six of Safran’s ENGINeUS electric motors will power the six propellers on the five-seat passenger E20. The ENGINeUS is Safran’s family of electric motors, the first of which Safran revealed in 2018. “Collaboration with Safran increases the maturity level of our aircraft design, especially the electric propulsion system design,” Yinji Huang, chief engineer of TCab Tech, said in a statement.
TCab is currently engaged in an ongoing series of flight tests of a half-scale version of the E20; on April 12, it announced that it had completed successful transition flights of the 50%-scale demonstrator. The subscale demonstrator, which first flew on Dec. 30, 2021, features a 19.7-ft (6-m) wingspan, two lift propellers and four tilt propellers. Like the E20, the demonstrator uses six propellers in VTOL and transitions to four propellers in cruise. The two lift propellers are switched off and locked during cruising flight.
