SkyFly Completes Axe Hover, Low-Speed Flights

UK-based SkyFly Technologies provided an update on Nov. 20 regarding the crewed test flights with its full-scale prototype conducted since receiving testing approval from the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) in June 2024. The start-up, founded in 2019, has completed the initial testing phase with its Axe SN001 aircraft, which involved tuning the handling of the two-seat aircraft during low-speed flights and hover tests. Wing-borne forward flight, including runway takeoffs, will be the focus of the next phase starting in January 2025.

On Nov. 15, the UK Ministry of Defence selected SkyFly to demonstrate a military version of the Axe called the eHarrier aircraft for the UK Uncrewed Air Systems Heavy Lift Capability framework. The eHarrier design has a fully electric or hybrid-electric configuration and would be capable of both autonomous or crewed missions, the company states.
