Transcend Reveals the Vy 421
Transcend Air is developing an evolution of its Vy 400 turbine-powered VTOL aircraft, the Vy 421, the company revealed in early August. Instead of the single-engine configuration of the Vy 400, the Vy 421 will be equipped with two GE Aviation CT7-8 turboshaft engines; it will be around 25% larger than its predecessor. The Vy 421 is expected to have a range of 1,000 miles (1,609 km) and a maximum speed of 486 mph (782 km/h). The design now features four electric tail-pitch fans instead of one.
The Boston-based Transcend Air, which has previously attracted financial support from the US Air Force, is hoping to market the aircraft to civil and military customers. In addition to the militarized version, the V-421, the company also unveiled the 11-passenger V-621, the V-22 Osprey-replacement V-641 and the C-130 Hercules-sized V-653 (see their entries in the VFS World eVTOL Aircraft Directory). The two largest VTOL transports would be capable of speeds of 460 kt (850 km/h).
