Wright Electric Wins Air Force Award

On Aug. 7, the US Air Force awarded Wright Electric a contract to develop high-power output rechargeable batteries. Under the Phase 1 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract awarded by the Air Force’s AFWERX innovation unit, Wright Electric will explore the possibility of using the batteries for multirotor drones. As a basis for the work, the Malta, New York, company intends to draw on its experience developing batteries capable of delivering 1,000 Watt-hours per kilogram and that are more sustainable than single-use batteries, according to a report by AIN. In February, the company was awarded funding by the US Department of Energy (DOE) under its Pioneering Railroad, Oceanic and Plane ELectrification with 1K energy storage systems (PROPEL-1K) program.
