FAIRFAX, Virginia — The Vertical Flight Society today announces the winners of its third annual Design-Build-Vertical Flight (DBVF) Student Competition. Auburn University took first place, University of Maryland took second and the McGill University took third.
The Vertical Flight Society is now celebrating 80 years since it was founded on Feb. 25, 1943, and officially recognized by the State of Connecticut as "The American Helicopter Society, Incorporated" on June 25, 1943.

The Vertical Flight Society (VFS), the world’s leading non-profit organization working to advance vertical flight, reports today that the explosive growth of world’s electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft — plus significant developments in military and civil rotorcraft — have continued to expand its membership.
Since 2019, VFS has held a series of regular workshops on infrastructure to support future operations of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft and other advanced air mobility (AAM) vehicles (see www.vtol.org/infrastructure), and has supported the development of initial standards (see “Vertiport Standards Update,” Vertiflite, Nov/Dec 2022).
